Frequently Asked Questions
What will I experience after the massage?
Most people will experience increased somatic awareness, ease of being, proprioception, available range of motion, and ease of motion. Massage can also sometimes lead to physical and emotional release. This can look like a buildup or sudden release of laughter, tears, or other strong emotions. I aim to create a safe, confidential, and supportive environment for your emotions to be felt and expressed.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GET A CUSTOM MASSAGE?
Massage should always provide an injection of good feelings and relief from the many to-do lists of life. The optimum frequency of massage for any individual always depends on practicality, available budget, and availability in the scheduling of the client. Frequency of care also depends on short and long-term goals, particularly if you are recovering from acute trauma or surgery.
All that being said, two to four times per month is a platinum preference for most healthy people. Once a month is a wonderful gold standard to shoot for. If budgeting and scheduling is a real source of stress for you around your ability to receive regular care, you can turn massages into a seasonal gift to yourself every three to four months.
CAN I GET A CUSTOM MASSAGE IF I’M PREGNANT OR POST-PARTUM?
If you are pregnant–please book “perinatal” when you book your appointment and include the term of pregnancy at the time of booking. Massage is wonderful for perinatal support, and only requires modification of positioning and bolstering to be safe, effective, and feel great!
WHEN SHOULD I NOT GET A CUSTOM MASSAGE?
No one with an active illness or infection should ever receive massage until their symptoms have subsided, or until clearance from a PCP has been given to receive massage.
Wounds, broken bones, varicose veins, and skin conditions can all be worked around for a safe and effective massage session.
Health history must be considered in any healthcare setting–massage included. We will always spend some time reviewing your health concerns and conditions, history of injury or surgery, preferences, dislikes and anxieties, and short and long-term goals prior to hands-on work.
IS IT NORMAL TO FEEL SICK OR “FLU-Y” AFTER A MASSAGE?
NO! I am a firm and adamant believer that massage should feel mostly pain-free and GOOD. Many of us learn and go with the philosophy of “no pain, no gain” in our relationships with our bodies. Though safe and effective massage may at times feel intense or even challenging, I believe that inflicting tissue damage and pain on the body is often counter-productive and unnecessary. In a therapeutic context, I insist on clear communication and will never disregard your body’s messages, verbal and otherwise.
